Dyslexia/Literacy Assessment process
Before an assessment
It is important to have had a recent sight test to ensure there are no visual acuity difficulties. A visual difficulties questionnaire will be given to establish whether there are any visual processing problems. If this is the case, a Behavioural Optometrist is recommended.
For more information on visual processing
Background information is gathered by questionnaire with the learner, their parent (if under 16) and, with permission, the education provider.

During an assessment
The assessment can take place at your home or place of education. It takes 2-3 hours to complete depending on age and individual needs, will have rest breaks where required and can take place over two sessions where necessary.
As an assessor, teacher and parent, I understand that the unknown situation may cause anxiety. Time is taken to establish a positive relationship before any formal testing begins. During the assessment, tests will look at:
-
General ability (aspects of verbal and visual ability)
-
Cognitive processing (how the brain takes in information and transforms it, stores it, recovers it and uses it)
-
Literacy skills (reading, spelling, and writing)
After an assessment
At the end of the assessment, some brief feedback will be given and I will answer any questions. I will produce a detailed report which will be emailed to you within 15 working days of the assessment. If I have been unable to give much feedback on the day, a telephone conversation will be offered to further explain the results of the assessment.
The report includes:
-
An overview of the report contents
-
A diagnosis if one is found
-
A summary of the background information
-
A full analysis of the assessment results
-
Recommendations for home, educational setting or workplace and includes exam access arrangements if necessary.
